Washington and Lee does not have a women's ruby team at any competition level, so those who want to play the sport compete on the VMI team. While the team has been successful against large universities such as UVA, they have encountered some problems with USA Rugby. Because of the rule that players must attend the institution for which they play, the VMI team cannot compete for the state championship as long as W&L women play with them.
